Why do Americans think a universal healthcare system is bad?

Can you answer Tucking Fypos's question about Healthcare?:

I'm Canadian, I show a card we all have, I get help. Some surgery waiting lists do take too long, and there are not enough family doctors, but I wouldn't want a private healthcare in a million years.

I can't imagine paying a dime directly for medical aid, and prescriptions cost pennies on the dollar.

They probably see the bang up job the government does with other services, like the DMV, and don't want their hospital to turn into that.

If you're not familiar with the DMV, it's the Department of Motor Vehicles, the government agency responsible for the registration and regulation of drivers and automobile ownership in most states of the United States.

My health is too important to entrust it to the government.

Some nutcase linked universal healthcare with communism and then with socialism and it hasn't lost that sting yet.

Funny thing is that international corporations now avoid the US because healthcare costs are borne by employers.

Interesting, huh?

It's all about taxes. Everyone here hates taxes… regardless of the fact that it's tax to HELP us.

Because we have 305 million people and only have 33 million?

So if we have universal health care its gonna be a pretty fu*king long line.

huggins @ 3:01 pm

Because the Medical & Pharmaceutical lobbies and very powerful in Congress and they don't want the system changed.

BTW, there are people with HMOs here in the USA who already have delays in seeing a doctor. Also, our Emergency Rooms are overflowing in some areas due to uninsured people going there for non-emergencies.

I agree to a degree. But there has to be a happy medium, the tax payers pay for it after all, nothing is free.

Well I like the fact that it doesnt really matter what I am in need of I dont have to go onto a waiting list to see a dr. Second thing I like is the fact that if you work you butt off and dont wait for the govt to take care of you it is amazing how far you will get in life. And you will be able to afford the insurance. What I dont like about socialized medicine is the fact that I should not be made responsible by way of taxes for paying someone elses healthcare. What is wrong with people taking on the responsibility for themselves? And last but not least California tried it and now the state is just about bankrupt

They seem to have a very strange outlook on the world. They seem to feel that to help someone else is a sign of weakness or stupidity, that we are all just here to grab as much as we can for ourselves. They also think that the only way to do that is to take something from someone else.

Self motivation and personal success are great things but must be balanced with social responsibility and sustainability. I am sure that Americans will start to realize this now with the present events unfolding in their economy.

Hopefully you won't get too sick. If you do, you'll need to come to the US for treatment, surgery, etc. Like so many Canadians do.

Some Americans think universal health care is bad because the insurance companies, the American Medical Association, health services organizations, and Pharmaceutical companies pay billions of dollars to candidates and campaigns to demonize universal health care as socialist or communist (playing on fears from the 1950's red scare). Its all about money. If health care becomes nationalized, the insurance industry (many companies of which are in the Fortune 500) become bankrupt.

I for one welcome, with open arms, free health care.

Universal healthcare is IMMORAL.

The government STEALS money through punishing rich people for making money so they can pay for poor people who don't take good care of themselves and don't have a good education because they did poorly in school so they don't have a good job that pays for health care.

A number of reasons.

One is they think it will cost too much in taxes. They don't realize that the added amount they would individually pay in taxes would be less than they are paying out of pocket right now for coverage.

Another, more nefarious reason is they don't want to pay for someone else's health care. They don't realize that they're paying for the uninsured anyway through their taxes, since the uninsured don't get regular medical care, and as such get a large amount of their care in the emergency room (funded by taxes if they can't pay).

Plus they believe the drivel about the government being in charge of their health care. They don't understand that the huge corporate HMOs are now in charge, and make their treatment decisions based on actuarial tables, not on someone's needs.

Nothing in life is free. That means your healthcare comes out of your tax dollars. It's a matter of having freedom of choice to choose how much or little insurance coverage you want, rather than having to buy into what everyone else is using.

As a Canadian living legally in the U.S., I've used both systems and frankly wouldn't have minded if the Canadian system had a user fee, to cut down on gratuitous visits to the doctor. A sniffle or blister doesn't necessitate a trip to the doctor, yet a lot of people do just that, if it's completely "free." Right now I pay for my own health insurance and have made my choice of what type of insurance I want.

I don't object to universal catastrophic coverage (as a society we take care of everyone) but don't love the idea of my tax dollars being used in a way that I am supporting people who don't pay into the system.

Since we are military, I'm pretty much on a government controlled health care.
-They don't pay for a lot of medical surgeries.
-The dental insurance covers about 40% of the bill.
-In Canada you can't get an ultrasound to find out a baby's sex.
-You have to call a hotline to make an appointment.
-If you are out of town, the only way it gets paid for is if you go to an ER.

And that's just a few off the top of my head. I'd never have government care if I could help it.
If it is so great, then why do tons of Canadians drive to the states for care? I know about 50 people in the past week alone have driven over the border to come to our tiny town for care.
