How many Americans would want a socialized healthcare system?

Can you answer harry's question about Healthcare?:

I am just wondering how many Americans out there would be willing to pay for universal healthcare? Keeping in mind that we could still have private hospitals for people who believe public hospitals would not be sufficient enough for them.
I should add this. I come from a military family, which means my healthcare is paid for by the government and my care provider is a military doctor. Now when I go to the emergency room I have an average wait time of 30 mins, I recieve excellent care and my doctor is well taken of (financially). I honestly don't see any reason why all American citizens can't enjoy the same healthcare I do.

I'd be more willing to accept more affordable health insurance to make it easier for people.

I think it would a good affordable way for everyone to have health care. You could purchase private insurance in addition to the socialized system and then choose your private care hospital so as to have private room etc. It works in Australia where I currently reside as an American. Service in ER's is about 1/2 hour in private hospitals as opposed to how many hours in the US?

I think the question is, is the for-profit nature of the U.S. healthcare system making it better, worse, or no change?

The profit margin of U.S. healthcare is about 30%, so making the system universal and non-profit would actually keep the current costs about the same - and cover everyone.

It would be like one giant HMO, with family doctors deciding access to care.

The wait in emergency rooms in hospitals is due to the fact that there are so many people leaching off the government's Medicaid program. While I was finishing up school, my wife and I had barely any money and we had to turn to Medicaid for a few months. They literally told us to go to the ER if ANYTHING is wrong. Upset stomach, headache, paper cut, it's taken care of in an ER. Imagine that situation, but multiply it 1000 times to include every single US citizen. There would be no point in it.

Plus, why would doctors go to school for 12+ years to work in hospitals where they don't get a chance to research and become the best in their field so they can make more money? Doctor quality would go down, hospital waits would go up.

And with private hospitals still being open, people will still show up at them thinking they can go to the ER when they have a problem and no money. Then they'll just disappear after they get well enough to sneak.

Bad deal all around.
