Cervical motion tenderness is also known as cervical excitation. Cervical motion tenderness as the name indicate tenderness present in cervical motion. It is a form of or fall in the category of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and ectopic pregnancy. Pelvic inflammatory disease is different from appendicitis, these two conditions may be mixed up due to apparent inflammation. This condition is diagnosed during a routine pelvic examination. It is a physical exam finding, in which two hands are used to check the movement and motion of pelvic region. Chandelier sign is another name of cervical motion tenderness. It may also be associated with ovarian cysts.

Cervical motion tenderness is a test to check the functioning of cervix. This test is performed in women with pelvic inflammatory disease PID, appendicitis, bleeding within abdomen, and diverticulitis. This test involves the manipulation of cervix by two methods i.e. by the use of fingers or by the use of speculum. The cervix which is located just below uterus and ends just above vagina. When patient respond with little discomfort during examination then the result is negative. But if patient respond with pain in pelvic region, the test result will be positive.

Cervical motion tenderness occurs as a result of vaginal infection. The vaginal infection may occur due to sexually transmitted disease which may further spread and involve other female sex organs like ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. These conditions may be fatal as these may lead patient to death. The other possible causes are some pathological conditions related to female reproductive system. Just like ectopic pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the fetus attaches itself with a wrong organ of female system which cause inflammation and pain in pelvic region of mother. Cyst formation is another reported pathological cause.

If patient face pain in pelvic region along with inflammation then it shows the presence of cervical motion tenderness specifying pelvic inflammation disease. Patient also suffer from fever. Pain in lower abdominal area and unusual discharges which may be new or different colored also indicate cervical motion tenderness. Women face extreme pain while sexual intercourse. Tenderness in uterine muscles also occur along with tenderness in adnexal region. There are some conditions which are associated with cervical motion tenderness and are also reported as symptoms of it i.e. cervical tumor, endometriosis and septic abortion.

Cervical motion tenderness is caused in many diseases, so the treatment plan is selected according to cause reported behind it. For cervical tumor there is a surgical treatment to remove the tumor cells from body. The infections in vagina are treated with some specified antibiotics according to the type and severity of vaginal infection. These antibiotics will also treat inflammation in pelvic region. Endometriosis and chlamydia are also treated with their specified treatment plan. The treatment for cervical motion tenderness is very important and on sudden note, because if it is left untreated it could prove fatal.
