Milk and molasses enema is the combination of milk and molasses which is used to treat chronic constipation. It works as a stimulant for bowel movement. It imparts a smooth effect on the walls of intestine and stimulates bowel peristalsis. It helps in passing stool. It is used in patients who have a very hard stool and is out of the reach of glove. In that case, the walls of intestine are well lubricated with water soluble gel. And then enema tube is passed inside. Enema will make stool soft and easy to pass from body.

While preparing milk and molasses enema, the temperature should be maintained i.e. 103° Fahrenheit. Take warm milk of quantity 16 oz and warm molasses of same quantity. The milk and molasses are mixed together on sauce pan and filled in enema bag. The mixture of milk and molasses can be counted as 1 portion and equal amount of portion of water can be added to it. After adding water the quantity will become 2 portions of enema. Now adjust the temperature of enema bag at 103° Fahrenheit. Milk and molasses enema is inserted inside intestine with the help of a tube. The end of tube is properly lubricated so that it can easily pass inside. At 1st the tube is inserted a few inches inside rectum and the enema bag is kept high so that enema can easily flow inside. Patient is asked to hold enema pressure inside rectum as long as he can. Then he is allowed to pass stool. After every 6 hours the same process is repeated until all the stool pass out of body. It clears the intestine without pain.

Take 16 oz of milk in a sauce pan. Heat it up to a boiling point. Now add molasses in it. Black strap variety of molasses is recommended because it has a strong flavor.  The milk and molasses both are used in equal amounts to prepare enema. After adding molasses, take sauce pan off the stove. Stirring should be continued. The addition of molasses will automatically reduce the temperature. Now make it down up to 102° Fahrenheit which is the best temperature to administer milk and molasses enema.

Milk and molasses enema works as an osmotic agent. Osmotic agents works by retaining moisture in the colon and rectum. The moisture gets absorb in the walls of intestine and helps in passing stool. Milk and molasses enema also bring down the pH of colon and rectum, making it smooth. Due to moisture retaining property of milk and molasses enema, it increases colonic peristalsis. osmotic agents contains large amount of sugars in them which helps in increasing bowel movement. This is the basic mechanism of action of milk and molasses enema.

In case of milk and molasses enema directions for preparation, milk is heated in a sauce pan first and then molasses is added. After that water is added to make up the volume and at the end temperature is maintained. Dry milk can also be used. Water and powdered milk are Shaked well in a jar. After mixing, molasses are added and then shake again. when mixing is complete, pour it in an enema bag. If we talk about directions for use, then the administration of milk and molasses enema should be carried out every 6 hours until the colon becomes clear.
