Baastrup's Disease Definition, Symptoms, Causes, Exercise, Treatment

Kissing spine is the other name of baastrup's disease. It is defined as the changes in the both spinous processes and also in the interspinous soft tissues of both neighboring vertebrae. This disease is named after a scientist named baastrup in 1993. It is a syndrome in which the adjoining lumbar and spinal processes are resulted in the formation of a new joint via close approximation to one another. In baastrup's disease, the most common area which is affected is lumbar area of spine. Usually L4 and L5 are mostly affected in lumbar region of spine in baastrup's disease.

Baastrup's Disease Symptoms

The main symptoms associated with baastrup's disease include excessive lordosis. This induces the mechanical stress on spine which in turn causes pain. Mechanical stress also induces repetitive strains and it combined with collapse and subsequent degeneration. Patients with kissing syndrome complains about pain in their back. Specifically this pain radiates through the mid line and radiates distally. Pain increases when patient extends his body but the pain relaxes upon flexion of the body. It is an abnormal connection between spinous processes which leads to formation of adventitious bursa and neoarthtosis. Pain is the main symptom showing problem in the lumbar region of spine.

Baastrup's Disease Causes

One of the main factor which is responsible for baastrup's disease is age. Other than age, some risks factors include
  • Incorrect posture of patient
  • Obesity
  • Any kind of injury or trauma.
  • Tuberculosis spondylitis.
  • The thoracic spine or the thoracolumbar transition becomes thick and stiff
  • Congenital dislocation of hip in bilateral forms.
  • Increased level of lordosis and as a result the mechanical stress increases and in turn patient feels pain.
  • The ligaments present in the interspinous location in brain may undergo repetitive strains and these strains may cause subsequent degeneration and collapse of ligaments.

Baastrup's Disease Exercise

The main purpose of the treatment outline of baastrup's disease is to decrease pain and hyperlordosis and to improve the functioning of spinal cord. When the pain is managed, physician recommend the physical therapy for patient. The exercises for baastrup's disease include stretching if the abdominal and spinal muscles. In case of weak abdominal muscles, the hip flexors are helpful in reshaping them. It is important to move hip flexor complex to move rectus femoris muscles. The exercises are specific to move the muscles lies next to site of spinal cord involved in pain.

Baastrup's Disease Treatment

There are two main treatment options I.e. Surgical and medical therapy. Usually medical therapy is recommended to subside pain. Usually injections of analgesics are used or oral dosage form of NSAIDS are used to relief pain. These injections are recommended two times a week. For a long term positive result of medications, steroids and local anesthetics are used are used with varying doses. If these injections does not work, then surgical treatment is recommended. Surgical procedures include excision of the bursa, osteotomy and partial or complete removal of spinous process. After surgery, patient have to stay in hospital for at least 30 days.
