What is Wide Based Gait?

A wide based gait is a walking pattern in which a person stands and walks with their feet placed farther apart than normal. Instead of keeping the feet relatively close together during walking, the legs remain spread apart to create a broader base of support. This walking pattern is often adopted because it provides additional balance and stability when the body's normal balance system is impaired. A wide based gait is not a disease itself but rather a clinical sign that may indicate an underlying neurological, musculoskeletal, vestibular, or spinal disorder. Healthcare providers carefully observe gait because it provides valuable clues about how the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, joints, and inner ear are functioning together. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery can significantly improve walking, balance, bladder control, and sometimes cognitive function when patients are diagnosed and treated early. Prompt recognition of a wide based gait associated with NPH is therefore essential because timely intervention may substantially improve quality of life.
