High arched palate is a condition in which the palate in mouth is higher than usual. It appears narrow and high. It is a congenital condition which occurs during fetal development within womb of mother. It usually occurs in isolation but in some cases it is reported with number of other conditions. Patient may acquire it later due to excessive thumb sucking in childhood. High arched palate cause complications like sleep disordered breathing and narrowing of airway. High arched palate is commonly associated with some diseases like marfan syndrome, down syndrome, apert syndrome, crouzon syndrome and incontinentia pigmenti.

High Arched Palate Symptoms


High arched palate causes complications like narrowing of airway and disordered breathing during sleep. So patient feels breathing problems while sleeping. Snoring is the common symptom. Due to narrowing of airway, patient cannot breath fully and sufocation may occur. Patient cannot lie down straight so he have to sleep side ways, as it makes breathing easier. Patient have to face difficulty in eating and swallowing food. High arched palate itself is counted as a main symptom of many diseases. These diseases involve marfan syndrome, down syndrome, crouzon syndrome, incontinentia pigmenti, apert syndrome and treacher Collins syndrome.

High Arched Palate Causes


It is a congenital condition which occurs during development of fetus within womb of mother. It is present by birth in most cases. But it can be acquired later due to chronic thumb sucking in childhood. As the bones are weak in small babies, so excessive thumb sucking deshape the palate causing high arched palate. It is considered a common symptom of many congenital diseases and most common of them is marfan and down syndrome. Other causes involve homocystinuria, pallister Killian syndrome, Rubinstein taybi syndrome and Turner syndrome. Some rare causes include hard palate cleft and pelger huet anomaly syndrome.

High Arched Palate Treatment


As it is a congenital condition so there is no specific treatment for high arched palate. Some scientists have said that it can resolve on its own with the passage of time. If it is the symptom of any congenital disease, then treating the root cause will ultimately treat high arched palate. Surgery can be performed in severe cases and after surgery, patient is asked to follow some mouth exercises to make the surgery successful. Surgery is recommended because hard palate deformity is associated with High arched palate, which will not resolve on its own.

High Arched Palate Diagnosis


High arched palate is a visible condition and do not require diagnosis. The high arched palate can be diagnosed via visual inspection and with the help of hand. As it appear unusually high and narrowed. High arched palate itself is a diagnostic parameter of many diseases. As it is a main symptom associated with many conditions like marfan syndrome, down syndrome, pelger huet anomaly syndrome, treacher Collins syndrome and apert syndrome, crouzon syndrome and Turner syndrome and incontinentia pigmenti. All these congenital diseases have high arched palate symptom in common and helps in diagnosing all these diseases.
