Sloped Shoulders in Female & Male Causes & Treatment

 Variations in shoulder morphology are normal and occur, just like they do in any other part of the body. Shoulders can be broad, rounded, or sloped, and these are only a few of the many possible shapes. There are cases where a sloping shoulder is caused by a hereditary defect. The sloping of the shoulders might be a result of improper posture and other lifestyle factors. 


A sloping shoulder is characterized by a considerable angle (20 degrees) between the horizontal plane and the shoulder edge. In addition to this, it features a muscle knot, which shows that the trapezius muscles have been overdeveloped. Sloped shoulders provide the impression of having a larger shoulder and a shorter neck. When it occurs in persons who are already overweight, the overdeveloped trapezius muscles will make them appear even larger.

Sloped Shoulders Causes

The trapezius muscle is basically a surface muscle that is triangular in shape and begins at the base of your neck. It then travels through your shoulders and along the center of your back, where it links to the clavicle and the scapula (collarbone). Two separate trapezius muscles work together to form one large, quadrilateral which plays important role in the overall shape of our shoulders. In a nutshell, the trapezius muscle is the main muscle that connects the shoulders to the neck.

The trapezius muscle is a big muscle that helps our neck and shoulders perform their activities. It is located in the upper back. The trapezius muscles are responsible for some shoulder types, including a sloped shoulder, shrugged shoulder, and short neck. One of the causes of a sloped shoulder is the formation of a thick shoulder in people with overdeveloped, powerful trapezius muscles and a lack of a bony shoulder profile.

Most of the time, shoulders that don't meet at 90° are caused by broad, overdeveloped trapezius muscles. This makes the neck look short, which is something you really don't want to be. Why did our trapezius muscles grow to such a large size in the first place?

1. Rounded shoulders and a stooped posture

Firstly, Males and Females with rounded shoulders have a tendency to rotate their trapezius muscles forward, resulting in a thicker shoulder.

Second, having rounded shoulders will cause the trapezius muscles to become more elongated, which will result in the loss of the muscle's mechanical balance. In order to restore equilibrium, the trapezius muscles will expand and strengthen, resulting in a broader shoulder.

2. Sagging shoulder

A sloped shoulder is a prevalent shoulder problem. It shows how the trapezius muscles have grown and thickened in an unnatural way.

3. Inappropriate muscle use

When females lift big objects, because of the lack of power in their arms, they will alternatively and unintentionally draw energy from the muscles in their trapezius. When this activity is performed excessively, it will inadvertently train the muscles. Thus, it is important for females to remember which muscles they have been using either at the gym or in everyday activities.

Treatment of Sloped Shoulders in Female & Male

Sloped shoulders can be inherited, so if you or your kid has them, talk to your doctor about physiotherapy as a possible cure. In some cases, a surgical fix could be suggested. You may be able to gradually change the curve of your shoulders by modifying the way you exercise if your overuse of the trapezius is the reason for your sloped shoulders.

Putting extra emphasis on the deltoids with workouts like the anterior deltoid raise is one approach to do this. It could be beneficial to work with a coach who can provide you with advice on correct posture and form.
